Independence Cream

Independence Cream.

Nothing pairs better with the American staples of burgers and hot dogs than good ‘ole ice cream. So celebrate our independence this fourth of July with some homemade vanilla ice cream. This easy recipe creates an incredibly rich and creamy ice cream that will have all your guest seeing stars.

Makes 5 quarts.

Ingredients.

2 1/2 cups milk

2 1/2 cups sugar

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 1/2 cups half and half

1 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract

5 cups whipping cream

So to start off this recipe you are going to simply scald the milk (heat it) in a big pot over medium-low heat until bubbles form around the edge of the pan. Next remove the milk from the heat and stir in the sugar and salt. Stir the two in until they are dissolved well. Now time for the real cream. To the milk mixture add the half and half, vanilla extract, and whipping cream. Stir the mixture well, cover, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.

Once your milk mixture has chilled follow your ice cream maker’s instructions to prepare the ice cream.

If your ice cream maker is like mine, you are gonna want to start off by chilling your ice cream can in the freezer a few hours before you begin. Then once your ice cream mixture is chilled you are going to pour it into your chilled can. The dasher/blade is then going to be place in the center of the can. The can is then going to be placed in the bucket and the top and motor is going to be placed on top of the can. Then you are going to start up the motor and while its running you are going to pack your can with even alternating layers of ice and rock salt. As the ice cream churns continue to maintain the ice level. The ice cream will take between 20 to 45 minutes to form. Once it reaches that firm creamy texture you are ready to serve.

I served mine as delicious ice cream sandwiches with graham crackers as the cookies and a crunchy buttery toffee coating.

You can also keep it simple by serving it with your own favorite ice cream toppings.

Bam. Done.
